White and Black Cliffs of Iturup — Coastal Hike on the Kuril Edge
A full tide-window day on the remote Sea of Okhotsk coast of Iturup: walking beneath the 28-kilometre wall of blinding-white pumice tuff cliffs at Belye Skaly, then tracing the black basalt sea stacks of the southern shoreline where the volcanic spine of the island meets the Pacific swell. AMIST handles the border-zone permits, 4x4 logistics and tide timing — you carry only your windproof shell and a camera.
About the excursion
Two cliff systems, one island, one long day: the white zeolite-tuff ramparts of Belye Skaly and the dark basalt towers of Iturup's southern coast — an itinerary that crosses the full chromatic range of Kuril geology in a single tide window.
The geology underfoot
Iturup is the largest of the southern Kuril Islands and the product of overlapping volcanic cycles that have been running for roughly two million years. The white cliffs — Belye Skaly — are the eroded edge of a Pleistocene pyroclastic sheet: welded pumice and zeolite-rich tuff so pale it reads as snow from the water. Along roughly 28 kilometres of the northern Sea of Okhotsk coast, Pacific swell and seasonal ice have carved the soft rock into organ-pipe fluting, slot canyons and collapsed amphitheatres. The beach where the canyons open is a mosaic of crushed white pumice and jet-black magnetite sand — the contrast is so sharp it looks composited.
The black cliffs to the south are basalt and andesite intrusions from a younger eruption cycle: columns and overhangs darkened further by kelp spray and shadow. Between the two formations the beach shifts through every shade the island's volcanoes have produced — obsidian, cream, rust and silver. Bogdan Khmelnitsky Volcano, still gently fuming, frames the inland horizon throughout the day.
How the day runs
AMIST builds this excursion around a weather and tide window out of Kurilsk, Iturup's main settlement. The transfer to the white-cliff section takes roughly two hours by 4x4, part of it along the beach itself — driveable only at low tide, which sets the day's schedule. We walk the tideline for four to six hours, entering the slot canyons where access is safe, reading the inscriptions of strata overhead. After a field lunch, the vehicle repositions to the southern headland for the black-cliff section: shorter, more vertical, better for late-afternoon light. Total time on foot is six to eight hours; the terrain is flat but the distances are real.
Groups are kept to six or fewer. The cliffs are a protected natural monument of Sakhalin Region — no sampling, no carving, no souvenirs beyond photographs.
Practical notes
- Base: Kurilsk, Iturup. AMIST arranges multi-day Iturup programmes; this excursion is typically Day 2 or 3.
- Permits: Iturup is a border-control zone. AMIST files the required paperwork — allow 2–3 weeks. Russian and foreign nationals, rules differ; ask our team.
- Getting to Iturup: 90-minute flight Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk → Yasny Airport (IKI). AMIST books tickets and coordinates weather-day buffers.
- Season: late June – mid-September. July and August have the fewest fog days; early September offers the clearest light and the fewest other visitors.
- Tide dependency: the beach section closes at high water. All timing is tide-table driven — departures may shift by 1–2 hours day-of.
- What to bring: waterproof boots you can wade in, a windproof and rainproof shell, polarising sunglasses (the white rock reflects intensely), sunscreen, 2 litres of water, a 70–200 mm zoom for cliff detail.
- Included: 4x4 transfer from Kurilsk, English-speaking guide, field lunch, border-permit paperwork.
Why AMIST runs this route
Most visitors to the Kurils reach Kunashir and go no further. Iturup is harder — the permit, the flight, the tidal logistics — and for that reason its cliffs stay empty. We have been placing private clients on Iturup since the Yasny civilian runway opened in 2014, and our Kurilsk partners handle the operational complexity so you can focus entirely on the landscape. We keep groups small because the cliffs are genuinely fragile, and because an empty slot canyon is worth more than a popular one.
