Tikhaya Bay Ice Waterfalls — Winter Snowmobile Day
An unusual Sakhalin winter day: three hours north to the frozen shore of Tikhaya Bay, a short snowmobile run across the snow-sheeted sea ice to the blue-ice waterfalls pouring off the Zhdanko cliffs, and — if you want — a roped top-rope pitch on a beginner-friendly ice column under a certified instructor. Hotel pickup, thermal overalls and heated boots provided, all climbing gear included. Small group, weather rebooked free. December to mid-March.
About the excursion
A winter-only day on the eastern coast of Sakhalin: frozen Tikhaya Bay, the Zhdanko Ridge dusted white against a cold sky, and a short snowmobile run to the blue-ice waterfalls that form on the seaward cliffs between December and March. One of the few genuine cold-season products on the island — and a clean introduction to Sakhalin ice climbing if you want it.
What you'll do
Hotel pickup in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk at 6:30 am in our 4×4, then north along the coast road — roughly three hours through snow-loaded stone birch forest to the approach above Tikhaya Bay (around 130 km). The bay freezes hard under the sheltering wall of the Zhdanko Ridge; where the waterfalls that tumble off those cliffs in summer would be only thin ribbons, the winter cold builds them into full blue-ice columns three to twelve metres high, sometimes more in a heavy year.
From the shore we run a short snowmobile transfer along the packed sea ice to the base of the falls — a guide per sled, guest riding pillion or solo after a briefing, depending on conditions. At the wall we spend one to two hours at the ice: photography, a walk along the frozen base, hot tea from the thermos. Guests who want the climb rope up with our certified instructor for a short top-rope session on a beginner-friendly column (crampons, ice tools, helmet and harness all provided; one pitch, protected from above, no prior experience required). Those who do not climb get the best seats on the shore. We are back in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk by 7–8 pm.
What makes it AMIST
Sakhalin's winter ice is unforgiving and badly signed — a soft spot on the bay, a corniced ridge overhead, a wind that changes the surface in an hour. We run this day only with a certified ice-climbing instructor and a separate snowmobile lead, we check ice thickness on the morning of the trip, and we will cancel a day rather than push a marginal forecast. Thermal overalls, heated boots, helmets and harnesses are included — you arrive in a ski jacket and we outfit the rest. Groups are capped at four guests so the climbing queue never turns into a wait in the cold.

Why we run this
Sakhalin is often sold as a summer island — the lighthouse, the oysters, the ridge in the sun — but the winter product is where the Sea of Okhotsk really reveals itself. The Tikhaya ice falls are a rare chance to stand inside that winter safely, under expert supervision, and to come home with a photograph that almost nobody else has brought back from a Russian island day trip.
