Aniva Lighthouse, Cape Evstafiy & Turquoise Lakes — Sea + Jeep Expedition

Sakhalin's most complete southern expedition: a sea voyage to the abandoned Aniva Lighthouse and wild Cape Evstafiy, then a jeep traverse to the turquoise crater lakes most visitors never find. Three distinct landscapes — open ocean, sheer basalt cliff, hidden mountain water — in one long day.

Morning: the sea crossing

Hotel pickup in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk departs before dawn for the three-hour road to Novikovo. The group boards a covered launch and heads east below Sakhalin's southern cliffs, where Steller sea lions occupy ledges year-round. The launch rounds Cape Aniva and holds station at Sivuchya Rock for 25 to 30 minutes: nine concrete storeys of decommissioned lighthouse, built by Japan in 1939, nuclear-powered 1990–2006, empty since. From Aniva the boat runs east to Cape Evstafiy — 30 to 40 minutes further. This volcanic basalt headland has fractured into columns above the waterline; in moderate swell the sea breaks white against the cliff face. The skipper works to the cape tip, then turns back toward Novikovo, arriving by late morning.

Afternoon: jeep to the turquoise lakes

At Novikovo the group transfers to expedition 4WD vehicles. The turquoise lakes — biryuzovye ozera — sit in shallow volcanic depressions on the southern peninsula, reachable only by jeep track across creek beds and volcanic scree. The drive takes 45 minutes to an hour from Novikovo.

The lakes' colour comes from dissolved minerals and suspended volcanic particles that scatter light selectively — turquoise to vivid blue-green depending on sun angle, striking from the water's edge and from the slopes above. The guide explains the volcanic geology and allows time for photography and walking. The return drive north reaches Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk by early evening.

What makes it AMIST

Sea crew and jeep guide coordinate before the day begins; Novikovo harbour is the planned transfer point. If sea conditions prevent the Evstafiy crossing the overland section expands; if the lake track is unsafe the sea section extends — we do not run half a day and call it complete. Group size is capped at twelve at sea and eight in the jeep convoy, keeping both sections personal.

• Duration: approximately 11–12 hours door-to-door; ~4.5 h sea, ~2 h jeep transit, ~1.5–2 h at the lakes.
• Transfer: hotel pickup Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk → 3 h road → sea → jeep traverse → return.
• Group size: max 12 sea, max 8 jeep.
• Included: hotel pickup, all transfers, full boat charter, jeep and guide, licensed skipper, life jackets, hot lunch at the lakes, hot tea throughout.
• Not included: personal travel insurance (recommended for remote-area activity).
• To bring: waterproof jacket, warm mid-layer, ankle-support hiking shoes, dry-sock change, sunscreen, 70–200 mm zoom for the lighthouse, wide-angle for the lakes, seasickness remedy.
• Season: late June – early September. Sea and road monitored independently; reschedule at no charge if either section becomes unsafe.
• Physical: moderate — uneven terrain at the lake margins. Normal fitness sufficient.
