Aniva Lighthouse — Sunset, Sunrise & Busse Lagoon Oysters (2 Days)
Two days that begin with the sea and end at the oyster bank: a morning boat crossing to the abandoned 1939 Aniva Lighthouse — nine storeys on Sivuchya Rock — an expedition camp on the Okhotsk shoreline for sunset and sunrise watched in open solitude, then a drive north to Busse Lagoon for freshly shucked oysters and sea urchin. All camping gear supplied, weather-honest rebooking, small group guaranteed. AMIST since 2001.
About the excursion
A two-day expedition that gives Aniva Lighthouse the time it deserves — arriving by sea, watching the cape change colour at dusk, then greeting the Okhotsk dawn before moving on to the quiet abundance of Busse Lagoon.
Day 1 — By Sea to the Lighthouse
Early morning pickup from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk; three hours south through Korsakov to the fishing village of Novikovo. Safety briefing at the harbour, then the team boards a motor launch for the 90-minute crossing east across Aniva Bay. En route the skipper passes Cape Mramorny, where pale quartzite cliffs drop straight into the water. The lighthouse emerges from whatever the weather has offered that morning: nine stacked concrete decks on Sivuchya Rock, sealed since 2006, built in 1939 by Japanese engineer Miura Shinobu when the cape was called Nakashiretoko. The skipper holds station for a long photograph and, when sea conditions allow, lands passengers on the rock for a closer look at the iron door and the carved inscriptions above it.
By late afternoon the team makes camp on a sheltered stretch of Okhotsk shoreline — tents pitched, fire laid, dinner cooked by the guide crew. The cape faces nearly due south, and on clear evenings the sun goes down over the open Pacific horizon in a wide arc of amber. Guests are free to walk the beach, photograph the lighthouse as the light changes, or simply sit at the fire. Clear skies permitting, the Milky Way over the dark Okhotsk coast is exceptional.
Day 2 — Sunrise, Then the Lagoon
Breakfast at dawn beside the sea. The eastern sky lightens quickly over the water; the lighthouse, now a silhouette against the early pink, makes the shot that most guests keep longest. After camp is struck and packed, the convoy drives north toward Busse Lagoon — a 40 km² brackish body separated from Aniva Bay by a narrow sandspit. A short boat transfer reaches the licensed shellfish beds on the eastern shore, where the guide shucks giant Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), scallops, and sea urchin on the bank. Lunch is fish soup, bread, and as much shellfish as the regeneration quota allows. Return to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk by evening.
What makes it AMIST
This is an expedition, not a hotel tour. The team sleeps on the same coast as the guests, cooks the same food, and knows the Aniva cape in all weathers. We built the overnight format because the lighthouse looks different at every hour and a single day compresses what deserves full attention. At Busse we work only with licensed operators whose beds are actively regenerating — the lagoon is a regional protected monument and we treat it accordingly.

Why two days
The Aniva Lighthouse is one of the most photographed places in Russia. Most operators run it as a fast day trip, arriving mid-morning and leaving before the light changes. We run it as an overnight because the cape at dusk and at dawn are different places, and because the combination with Busse Lagoon the following morning — oysters eaten cold in the sea air after a night on the coast — is an honest Sakhalin sequence that cannot be shortened without losing its meaning.
