Sea Trip to Aniva Lighthouse & Cape Evstafiy

One full sea day along the underside of Sakhalin Island, combining the abandoned Aniva Lighthouse with the volcanic basalt cliffs of Cape Evstafiy — two landmarks that define the island's southern character, linked by one extended voyage.

What you'll do

Hotel pickup in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk departs early morning for the three-hour road south to Novikovo. At the harbour the group boards a covered launch — life jackets fitted, sea state confirmed — and heads east along Sakhalin's southern coast. The first 45 minutes run below sheer cliffs where Steller sea lions haul out on lower ledges; our skippers know the colony sites.

The first stop is Aniva Lighthouse. The launch rounds Cape Aniva and holds station off Sivuchya Rock for 25 to 35 minutes, close enough to read the Japanese-era inscriptions above the sealed entrance. The guide covers the lighthouse's biography: built 1939 under Karafuto Prefecture, running when Soviet forces arrived in 1945, converted to strontium-90 RITEG power in 1990, decommissioned 2006. Photographs from all angles while the skipper monitors swell.

From Aniva the route continues east to Cape Evstafiy — 30 to 40 minutes further. This headland of dark basalt has fractured into columns and overhangs above the waterline. At close range the scale is striking: the wall rises steeply enough that the launch feels small against it. The skipper works slowly along the cliff to the cape tip, then turns for Novikovo. Hotel return to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is by early evening.

Cape Evstafiy: what to know

Cape Evstafiy sits roughly 12 kilometres east of Cape Aniva. It is almost never reached by land — the approach demands rough cross-country jeep track or long coastal hiking — so almost all visitors arrive by sea. The cape is formed from the same volcanic basalts that underlie southern Sakhalin, fractured by columnar jointing and exposed where erosion has stripped softer overburden. Seabirds nest in the cliff faces in summer.

What makes it AMIST

This route is longer at sea than our standard Aniva excursion. Our skippers carry 48-hour forecasts and reschedule without penalty if conditions are marginal. We do not run shortened versions: if Evstafiy cannot be reached safely you get a full refund or reschedule, not a partial substitute. Groups stay small — maximum twelve — so every passenger has sightlines throughout.

Practical notes

• Duration: approximately 9–10 hours door-to-door; sea time approximately 4.5–5 hours total.
• Transfer: hotel pickup Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk → 3 h road to Novikovo → sea voyage → 3 h road return.
• Group size: max 12.
• Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, transfers, full-day boat charter, licensed skipper and guide, life jackets, hot tea and snacks.
• Not included: full lunch (bring your own, or add Busse Lagoon — ask at booking).
• To bring: windproof waterproof jacket, non-slip shoes, polarising sunglasses, 70–200 mm zoom, seasickness remedy, sunscreen.
• Season: late June – early September. Weather reschedule at no charge.
• Physical: lighthouse and cape viewed from the boat; no landings.

Choosing between the routes

For maximum lighthouse time with a shorter sea commitment, our half-day Aniva-only excursion suits better. This route is for guests who want the complete southern coastline — both headlands, the sea-lion cliffs between them, and the experience of crossing real open water to reach places most visitors never see.
