Sakhalin Fisherman — Ice Fishing for the Whole Family

Ice fishing is the Sakhalin winter ritual that locals guard most carefully — and the one that surprises visitors most completely. A morning on Aniva Bay with a rod over a hole, the smell of fresh cucumbers drifting up from the bucket, and a snowmobile waiting when the cold wins.

What you'll do

The team collects you from central Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and drives south to Aniva Bay, where the ice typically reaches 50–70 cm by late January — thick enough to be driven on, transparent enough to watch the smelt school below. Holes are pre-drilled and equipped with traditional Sakhalin winter rods. The main quarry is the Pacific smelt (Osmerus mordax), called koryushka in Russian, which runs in dense shoals under the bay ice all winter and is famous across the Russian Far East for its fresh-cucumber scent when pulled from the water. Alongside smelt the team targets navaga (Eleginus gracilis), the lean cod relative that flash-freezes on the ice the moment it is landed.

For children and anyone whose patience with a stationary rod runs out, snowmobiles are on hand. A short safety briefing, then guests ride in pairs along the snow-covered coastal strip — enough speed and turning to be genuinely fun without the technical demands of a full off-road route. Adults can take the handlebars; younger children ride as passengers behind the guide.

Lunch is served directly on the ice: hot tea from a thermos, fried smelt cooked on a portable stove, open sandwiches with butter and red salmon roe. Whatever has been caught belongs to the group to take home; the team provides packaging for transport.

What makes it AMIST

We use a prepared and permitted fishing site on Aniva Bay that we have worked since the ice season of 2014. The location is chosen for consistent fish activity and stable ice, not proximity to the road. Equipment is checked and replaced each season; rods, bait, ice picks, and warm gloves are included so guests need not source their own. The snowmobile route is designed with children in mind: wide, flat, away from traffic, with a guide alongside throughout.

Practical notes

• Duration: ~8 hours door-to-door from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
• Season: January – March. Ice conditions confirmed day before; postponement at no charge if unsafe.
• Suitable for: all ages; children from age 5 with a parent or guardian. No fishing experience required.
• Included: transfer from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, fishing equipment (rods, bait, ice picks), snowmobile session, hot lunch on the ice (fried smelt, tea, sandwiches with roe), packaging for catch.
• Not included: personal winter clothing (see below).
• Tariffs: Friends & Family (min 4 persons) ₽12 500 per person (≈ $140); Family (min 3) ₽13 000 per person (≈ $145); VIP (min 2) ₽18 500 per person (≈ $205).
• To bring: thermal underlayer, insulated waterproof trousers and jacket, warm boots rated to −25 °C, hat and balaclava, sunglasses (ice glare is intense in February), hand warmers. The guide crew carries spare gloves.
• Departure point: Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk city centre (exact pickup confirmed on booking).

A note on the smelt

Sakhalin smelt season is the social event of the island winter. On weekends the bay ice is dotted with hundreds of figures huddled over rods, and the smell of frying koryushka drifts through every market from January to March. If you have time for only one winter activity on Sakhalin, this is the one that locals themselves choose — and the one children remember longest.
