Sakhalin is a genuine paradise for fishing enthusiasts. The island's unique geography, rich biodiversity, and abundant water resources make it one of the most attractive destinations for anglers from across the country. One of the most popular fishing locations is Aniva Lighthouse, situated at the southern tip of the island on Cape Aniva.
The island's position and distinctive climate allow visitors to enjoy a wide range of fishing styles. Both sea fishing and river fishing are available under the guidance of experienced local specialists.
Sea Fishing
Sea fishing is one of Sakhalin's most popular tourism activities. Guided tours visit the best spots along the coast: Aniva Bay, the Kholmsk district, the Nevelsk district, and the Sea of Okhotsk near the villages of Okhotskoye and Starodubskoye. Fishing is permitted in these areas. The summer season opens in May, with peak activity in late summer (August) and autumn. A fishing permit must be obtained before you go.
What can you catch? The coastline offers a wide variety of species including cod, pollock, flounder, greenling, masu salmon, pink salmon (gorbusha), and halibut. Sharks and rays are occasionally spotted. Sea fishing takes place from a boat at the most productive grounds — AMIST organises the entire process so you can focus on the catch.
Aniva Lighthouse — the Island's Landmark
Aniva Lighthouse was built by the Japanese in 1939 and stands as a remarkable example of the engineering of its era. The 31-metre tower rises from Sivuchya Rock, a small rocky islet at the cape, and has become an iconic symbol of Sakhalin.
The waters around the southern tip of the island are exceptionally rich in fish, making Aniva one of the most celebrated fishing spots on the island. Sea fishing near the lighthouse is known both for its variety and for the chance to land a trophy specimen.
The boat journey to the lighthouse is itself a memorable experience — the route passes through rocky coastal scenery and crystal-clear water.
What to Catch at Aniva Lighthouse and When to Go
The waters around Aniva Lighthouse hold a wide range of species: cod, rockfish, greenling, pollock, halibut, flounder, chum salmon (keta), coho salmon (kizhuch), pink salmon (gorbusha), masu salmon, and others. Every angler can find a preferred target here.
Weather conditions are worth considering — conditions at the cape can change quickly. The best months are summer and early autumn, when the water warms slightly and fish activity increases.
Safety on the Water
When you travel with our team, safety at remote locations such as Aniva Lighthouse is our top priority. We always notify the relevant authorities and register our routes with the emergency services, use GPS navigation and modern communications equipment, carry life jackets for every person on board, and crew members are trained for emergency situations.
Fishing tours are available in both group and private formats.
River Fishing
River fishing is another popular option on Sakhalin. The island has approximately 60,000 rivers, many of which attract both tourists and locals. Salmon run these rivers seasonally, giving you a real chance to catch pink salmon (gorbusha) or chum salmon (keta).
The most productive rivers include the Lyutoga, Uryum, Poronai, Naiba, and Langeri. Species caught here include chum salmon, pink salmon, pike, Dolly Varden trout, crucian carp, Amur catfish, and loach. The rivers also hold Sakhalin roach, white-spotted char (kundzha), grayling, and coho salmon (kizhuch).
River fishing season runs from May through September. Fishing permits are required.
All fishing tours on Sakhalin are available as group or private departures. Combined excursions that include visits to scenic capes and coastal areas can be arranged on request. Guides know exactly where fish are concentrated and where trophy catches are realistic — no one comes back empty-handed.
Fishing on Sakhalin, and at Aniva Lighthouse in particular, is a one-of-a-kind experience that combines dramatic natural scenery with the opportunity to land exceptional fish. Whether you are a first-time angler or a seasoned professional, you will find something special here.
