About the tour

Most Thailand visitors only see the beaches. Northern Thailand is a different country: cooler air, forested mountains, a 700-year-old city ringed by ancient moats, and a living culture that predates Bangkok by centuries. AMIST's Chiang Mai programme is our most-requested cultural tour — the one guests describe as life-changing rather than just relaxing.

Day-by-day

Day 1 — Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Chiang Mai. Connecting flight via Bangkok. Transfer to the Old City, boutique hotel inside the moated square. Evening stroll through Tha Phae Gate and Nimman Road — the city's creative quarter.

Day 2 — Temples of the Old City. Guided morning walk: Wat Chedi Luang (15th-century, 60 m chedi), Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chiang Man (the city's oldest, c. 1297). Afternoon free: Walking Street or traditional massage at a certified school.

Day 3 — Doi Suthep. Mountain road to the temple at 1 080 m — 306 naga-flanked steps to the gold chedi, panoramic views over the Ping River valley. Afternoon at Huay Kaew Arboretum; optional canopy zip-line.

Day 4 — Doi Inthanon: the roof of Thailand. Full day at Doi Inthanon National Park. Summit at 2 565 m: twin royal chedis, Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest trail, Wachirathan waterfall, lunch at a hill-tribe cooperative.

Day 5 — Hill-tribe villages. 4WD into the highlands northwest of the city. Karen long-neck village and Akha settlement — cultural presentations, crafts market, traditional lunch. Afternoon at Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden; Sunday Walking Street night bazaar.

Day 6 — Chiang Rai. Three-hour drive north. Wat Rong Khun — the White Temple in mirror glass. Baan Dam (Black House). Return via the Golden Triangle at Sop Ruak, where three countries meet across the Mekong.

Day 7 — Cooking, craft and leisure. Morning Thai cooking class at a heritage farm. Afternoon free: Wualai silver workshop, ethical elephant sanctuary (no-ride), or day spa. Farewell dinner at a riverside Lanna restaurant.

Day 8 — Departure. Late checkout, transfer to Chiang Mai Airport, onward via Bangkok to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Why we run it

AMIST added Chiang Mai after Pattaya guests said they wanted to understand Thailand, not just lie on its beaches. The north rewards curiosity: cultural depth, layered food, mountain landscapes unlike anything coastal. We cap groups at fourteen — small enough to enter hill-tribe villages respectfully, eat where locals eat, and linger at Doi Inthanon's cloud-forest trail when the mist is right. This is the Thailand that stays with you.
