Hanoi & Halong Bay — 8-day cultural and scenic journey

Northern Vietnam is a different world from the beach south: a thousand-year-old capital, French-colonial streets, midnight street-food lanes, and — four hours east — a bay so improbable that early sailors thought dragons had scattered the islands. AMIST’s Hanoi and Halong Bay tour pairs both worlds in one eight-day charter itinerary from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Day-by-day

Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi. Charter via Vladivostok or Moscow; transfer to a 4-star hotel in the Hoan Kiem district.

Day 2 — Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. Morning walk through the 36 guild streets — silk, paper, lacquerware, tin — unchanged since the 13th century. Afternoon: Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple via the red Huc Bridge, and the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu, founded 1070). Evening: night-market street-food walk.

Day 3 — Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and West Lake. Presidential complex: mausoleum, stilted house, One Pillar Pagoda. Afternoon: Tran Quoc Pagoda and a cyclo ride through Truc Bach neighbourhood. Optional: water puppet theatre.

Day 4 — Transfer to Halong Bay. Free Hanoi morning; private coach to Ha Long City pier (4 hours). Embarkation onto your overnight junk — welcome deck reception as the first limestone towers emerge from the water.

Day 5 — Kayaking, caves, floating village. Guided kayak through Luon Cave arch into a hidden karst lagoon. Surprise Cave (cathedral-scale stalactites). Late afternoon: Cua Van floating fishing village. Seafood dinner on deck.

Day 6 — Sunrise, Ti Top Island, return. Dawn from the bow as mist lifts off the towers. Ti Top Island: 400 steps, panoramic bay view. Midday disembarkation; coach back to Hanoi. Farewell rooftop dinner over the Old Quarter.

Day 7 — Ethnology Museum or Ninh Binh day-trip. Option A: Vietnam Museum of Ethnology + Hoa Lo Prison Museum. Option B: Ninh Binh (90 km south) — rowboat through Tràng An flooded cave passages, Bich Dong Pagoda.

Day 8 — Departure. Morning Old Quarter shopping — silk, lacquerware, Vietnamese coffee. Transfer to Noi Bai Airport; return charter to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

• Duration: 8 days / 7 nights (5 hotel + 2 junk).
• Departures: October–April. November–February: clearest, coolest, best for photography. March–April: warmer, misty, dramatic bay light.
• From price: ₽125 000 per person (≈ $1 420), double. Single supplement applies; Ninh Binh option carries a small surcharge.
• Group size: 12–22 guests on one private junk — no strangers sharing the vessel.
• Visas: Russian citizens visa-free up to 45 days. AMIST confirms requirements before departure.
• Climate: Hanoi Nov–Feb: 15–22 °C, occasionally misty — bring a light jacket. Mar–Apr: warmer, occasional rain.
• Mobility: Old Quarter cobblestones; Surprise Cave 200 steps; Ti Top Island 400 steep steps. Discuss alternatives with the group leader if needed.
• What to bring: Layers, walking shoes, modest dress for temples, kayak waterproof bag, camera.

Why we run it

Halong Bay is one of those places where photographs simply fail — 1,600 karst towers rising from a jade sea, no coastline visible from the centre. Pairing it with Hanoi completes the experience: a city of deep historical layering and some of the world’s finest street food, followed by two days of still water and ancient rock. AMIST has run northern Vietnam itineraries since 2019, selecting only small traditional junk vessels. Our group leaders know the quieter anchorages and cave passages the day-trip boats never reach.
