May Holidays on Sakhalin

Four May days on Sakhalin — post-winter air, sea lions returning, the season's first oysters

30 April — 8 May 4 days / 3 nights Sakhalin

About the tour

May on Sakhalin is the moment the island wakes up: the snow at sea level has melted, the sea lions have returned to the breakwater at Nevelsk, the boats start running to Aniva Lighthouse, and Busse Lagoon is into its first oyster season of the year. The Sakhalin tour calendar opens here. Four days take you through three southern coasts — west, south, east — and the May light gives all three what photography wants from them: cold tones, sharp horizons, no haze.

Four days build around three coasts:

Nevelsk and the sea lions — day one. After arrival, transfer to Nevelsk on the west coast for a sea trip out to the breakwater where Steller sea lions haul out: a colony of dozens, sometimes a hundred, in May. Heavy bulls bellowing, mothers with pups, the whole rookery audible long before you can see it. Dinner on the shore.

Cape Aniva and Busse Lagoon — day two. Boat trip to the abandoned 1939 Aniva Lighthouse on its sheer rock at the southernmost cape, with copper patina, seaweed and circling kittiwakes. On the way back — into Busse Lagoon: oysters fresh from the water with lemon and rye bread. On the route: a life jacket is mandatory. Bring a rain shell, hat and gloves. In bad weather the sea trip is replaced by an automobile tour.

The amber coast and Tikhaya Bay — day three. North-east to the Sea of Okhotsk shore: amber-hunting on a stretch of beach where pieces still come up after spring storms, then the Japanese-era Torii gates near Vzmorye, and the unusual rock formations of Tikhaya Bay below the Zhdanko Ridge. Recommended: comfortable trainers or trekking shoes, gloves, rubber sandals, insect repellent, swimwear. Day four — departure.

Group up to ten, all transfers, professional instructors, meals as per programme — all included. Air ticket to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, individual boat to Aniva (from ₽40,000), early check-in or late check-out — separate.

Four May days on Sakhalin is the cleanest version of the southern island: post-winter air, the sea lions back, oysters at the source, and the amber coast not yet crowded. Guests come back early in the season — before everyone else's photos appear. May runs only six times a year; book at least two months ahead. Bookings via the office; weekday dispatch.

FAQ

What's the weather like on Sakhalin in May?

Sakhalin weather is unpredictable. In one day on a route you can run into snow, rain and overheat in the sun. Use multiple clothing layers. A membrane wind-shell is your best friend on excursions.

What if the weather at sea is bad?

In bad weather, when going out to sea is impossible, the voyage is replaced by an automobile tour. The tour operator reserves the right to adjust the order of excursions, with the scope of the programme remaining unchanged.

Are wellington boots needed?

We recommend bringing wellington boots or shoe covers. If you don't have them — let the programme coordinator know and we'll provide them on loan free of charge.

How do I get to Sakhalin?

Direct flights from Moscow take about 8 hours. From Vladivostok and Khabarovsk — 1.5–2 hours. Airport transfer is included in the tour price.
