Sakhalin and the Sea Lions — tour through Sakhalin

Sakhalin and the Sea Lions

Five days on Sakhalin around the Steller sea lion colony — April through July only

12 May — 28 July 5 days / 4 nights Sakhalin

About the tour

At six in the morning at Nevelsk port you hear it all at once: surf, gulls, and a low guttural roar that sounds like nothing else — Steller sea lions lying in a dense black mass on the wreck of an old pier. They are the largest eared seals in the North Pacific: males reach up to eleven hundred kilograms, and their voice carries several hundred metres on a clear morning. Nevelsk is the only place on Sakhalin where Steller sea lions haul out within the city limits, on a breakwater you can walk up to. They come back at the end of April and stay until July, when the colony is at its largest.

Five days build around three coasts of southern Sakhalin: south-east, south-west, south.

Cape Ptichy and Cape Velikan — day two. Jeep tour along the south-eastern coast. The stone sculptures of Cape Ptichy — a seabird nesting site of black-tailed gulls and cormorants. Giant rock arches and grottoes of Cape Velikan, sandstone shaped by the surf, photogenic in any light.

Nevelsk and the sea lions — day three. Trip to the south-west port city of Nevelsk. A walk along the seafront, then a short sea trip out to the colony — close enough that you stop trying to count the animals and start watching the bulls argue. Onward to Kholmsk, Sakhalin's main sea gateway and the railway-ferry link with the mainland.

Cape Aniva and Busse Lagoon — day four. Boat trip to the abandoned 1939 Aniva Lighthouse on its sheer rock at the southernmost cape — copper patina, seaweed, circling kittiwakes. On the way back — into Busse Lagoon: oysters fresh from the water with lemon and rye bread. On the route: a life jacket is mandatory.

Group up to ten, hotel in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, all transfers, professional instructors, meals as per programme — all included. Air ticket to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, individual boat to Aniva Lighthouse (from ₽40,000 per boat), early check-in or late check-out — separate. Best season: end of April through July, when the sea lion colony is largest.

Five days on Sakhalin built around the single best wildlife encounter on the island. The Steller sea lion colony is reachable on a half-day trip from a comfortable city base, and pairs cleanly with the lighthouse, the lagoon and a jeep day on the south-eastern coast. The colony season is roughly April through July — outside that window, the rocks are empty. Email the office for current departure dates.

FAQ

How do I get to Sakhalin?

Direct flights from Moscow (Aeroflot, Rossiya, S7) — about 8 hours. From Vladivostok and Khabarovsk — 1.5–2 hours. Airport transfer is included in the tour price.

When is the best time to see the sea lions?

The sea lions live off the Nevelsk coast from late April through July. The best time to watch them is May–June, when the colony has its largest numbers.

What if the weather is bad?

The tour operator reserves the right to adjust the order of excursions depending on weather. The scope and content of the programme remain unchanged. The Aniva Lighthouse sea voyage depends on sea conditions — if it cannot run, it is replaced.

Where will we stay?

Accommodation in a hotel in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. If you book your accommodation independently, transfers are provided only to/from our standard partner hotels.
