"Place of Power" — Frog Rock
An excursion in Sakhalin Oblast by AMIST tour operator
About the excursion
Frog Rock Outcrop
Frog Rock is a rock formation around 8 metres high in the foothills of the Susunaisky Range, 20 km from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk near Vestochka village. The rock is about 70 million years old. From a particular angle, the formation resembles a frog poised to leap. Since 1983 it has held the status of a regional natural monument. The ancient Ainu people revered this place as the sacred energy centre of the island — the Temple of Wisdom.
The Route
A transfer from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Vestochka village (around 40 minutes). Then a walking trail to the rock — the shortest and safest nature route in southern Sakhalin. From the viewing platform at the summit, a panorama of the hills and the coastline opens up. After that — a transition to the Aikhor waterfall (around 2 km along the trail). Aikhor is an 8-metre waterfall in the upper reaches of the Komissarovka river, below which extends a 200-metre cascade of smaller waterfalls. The trail follows the steep bank of the Aichka stream through pristine forest.
Practical Information
Difficulty: easy, suitable for children from 6 years of age. Elevation gain is minimal. Trekking shoes or closed sports footwear are required — the trail to the waterfall can be wet. In summer, bring insect repellent (mosquitoes and midges along the trail). Take snacks and water with you.
