Sakhalin Drive
Six days, three southern Sakhalin coasts and one overnight at Busse Lagoon at dawn
About the tour
The 4WD leaves Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk at six in the morning — six days and roughly a thousand kilometres ahead, on an island where almost nowhere is reachable without a ford or a dirt track. The tyres bite into wet grass, the vehicle drops into a riverbed almost up to its bonnet, the smell of resin and damp earth drifts out of the forest, and two hours later the road ends at a cliff with the Sea of Okhotsk and the first lighthouse below. That's Sakhalin Drive — not a transfer from one point to the next, but a way to see the island through the eyes of the people who live on it.
Six days build around a single overnight away from the city — at Busse Lagoon — and four jeep-tour days across three coasts.
Aniva Lighthouse and Busse Lagoon — two days, with an overnight. Days two and three. A boat trip to the abandoned 1939 Japanese lighthouse on Sivuchya Rock. Lunch with Sakhalin oysters at Busse Lagoon, where oysters have been farmed since the 1970s. The turquoise lakes and Cape Evstafiya. Overnight at a turbaza on the lagoon — the only night of the tour outside Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Sunrise on the lagoon and a slower morning along the south-east coast before the return drive to the hotel.
Cape Ptichy and Cape Velikan — day four. Jeep tour along the south-eastern coast. Rock arches, grottoes and stacks of Cape Velikan — among the most photogenic places on the island. Cape Ptichy with its seabird colonies.
Cape Vindis and Cape Kuznetsov — day five. Jeep tour along the south-western coast. Cape Vindis — a wild, hard-to-reach place with photogenic views. Cape Kuznetsov — the route through difficult fords to the southernmost point of the itinerary. Day six — departure.
Group up to ten, comfort hotel in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk plus an overnight at the Busse Lagoon turbaza, all transfers, professional instructors, meals as per programme — all included. Air ticket to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, individual boat to Aniva Lighthouse (from ₽40,000 per boat), early check-in or late check-out — separate.
Six days is the right length for southern Sakhalin if you want the lighthouse, the oysters and three coasts of capes — with one night out of the city to see Busse Lagoon at dawn. Different from «The Mysterious Island» (same coasts, no overnight on the lagoon) and from «Introduction to Sakhalin» (no overnight, no jeep day to Cape Evstafiy). Mixed-group departures run weekly through the summer.

FAQ
How do I get to Sakhalin?
Direct flights from Moscow (Aeroflot, Rossiya, S7) — about 8 hours. From Vladivostok and Khabarovsk — 1.5–2 hours. The arrival airport is A. P. Chekhov Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Airport-to-hotel transfer is included.
Do I need to be physically fit?
No special training is required, but you should be ready for walking on uneven terrain (up to 5–7 km per day). Routes include off-road sections, dirt roads and fords on 4WD vehicles.
What's the weather like on Sakhalin in summer?
Temperatures from June to September: +15 to +25 °C. The weather is unpredictable — in one day you can run into sun, rain and fog. A membrane wind-shell is essential. The best months are July–August.
What if the weather is bad?
The tour operator reserves the right to adjust the order of excursions depending on the weather. The scope and content of the programme remain unchanged. The Aniva Lighthouse sea voyage depends on sea conditions — if it cannot run, it is replaced.
Where will we stay?
Accommodation in a hotel in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (basic-comfort level). On day 2 — overnight at the Busse Lagoon turbaza. If you book your hotel independently, transfers are provided only to/from our standard partner hotels.
